Overview
The DNA polymerase alpha catalytic subunit, also known as POLA1 or p180, is the core enzymatic component of the eukaryotic DNA polymerase alpha-primase complex. This enzyme plays a critical role in the initiation of DNA replication and is essential for cell proliferation. It lacks intrinsic 3′ exonuclease activity for proofreading errors, which limits its processivity and fidelity compared to other replicative polymerases like delta or epsilon.
