DNA Polymerase IIIC (polIIIC) is a bacterial DNA polymerase essential for chromosomal replication in Gram-positive bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis. It belongs to the C-family of DNA polymerases and catalyzes the 5'→3' synthesis of new DNA strands while possessing 3'→5' exonuclease activity for proofreading. As it is unique to prokaryotes (specifically certain bacterial lineages), it presents a potential target for narrow-spectrum antibiotics.
