Bacterial topoisomerase IV is a type II DNA topoisomerase essential for managing bacterial chromosome topology during replication and segregation. It is a heterotetramer (ParC2ParE2) that primarily functions to decatenate interlinked daughter chromosomes after DNA replication and relax positive supercoils. It is a validated antibacterial drug target, with fluoroquinolones and novel bacterial topoisomerase inhibitors (NBTIs) inhibiting its activity.
