Overview

DNAH17 antisense RNA 1 is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) gene transcribed from the DNAH17 locus in the human genome. This molecule does not encode a protein but instead regulates gene expression at multiple levels. Mechanistically, DNAH17-AS1 acts as an antisense RNA, binding to microRNAs and other RNA-binding proteins, thereby affecting the stability and translation of target messenger RNAs. DNAH17-AS1 is upregulated in several cancers, such as non-small cell lung cancer and pancreatic carcinoma, where it promotes cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and suppresses apoptosis, functioning as an oncogenic lncRNA via ceRNA (competitive endogenous RNA) mechanisms. Clinically, its expression is associated with tumor progression and patient survival, highlighting its potential as both a biomarker and a therapeutic target. Additionally, it is implicated in male infertility relating to spermatogenic failure by possibly regulating DNAH17 heavy chain protein expression.
