DNL-type zinc finger protein (abbreviated DNLZ, also known as TIMM15, HEP1, ZIM17, mtHsp70-escort protein, and several other aliases) is a mitochondrial protein featuring a zinc finger-like motif. Unlike classical zinc finger transcription factors, DNLZ is not known to bind DNA or RNA nor to act in signal transduction, but rather functions as a chaperone/escort that regulates the activity, folding, and import of mitochondrial Hsp70 proteins. The protein is essential for mitochondrial protein homeostasis, but it is not an enzyme, transporter, channel, or receptor, nor is it yet recognized as a therapeutic target or biomarker. Many aliases exist because of separate identification in different species (e.g. yeast, human), sequence annotation projects, and functional studies; all refer to the same class of mitochondrial proteins involved in Hsp70 regulation and protein import machinery. No disease associations, drug interactions, or therapeutic developments have been described for this protein.
