DOPA decarboxylase, also known as aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase (AADC), is a pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP)-dependent enzyme that catalyzes the decarboxylation of L-DOPA to dopamine and L-5-hydroxytryptophan to serotonin. These reactions are critical steps in the biosynthesis of key neurotransmitters and the enzyme is a therapeutic target for neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease. Inhibitors like carbidopa are used to modulate the peripheral conversion of levodopa.
Inhibits peripheral decarboxylation of levodopa, increasing the amount of levodopa available to cross the blood-brain barrier for conversion to dopamine in the brain.
