DOPA Decarboxylase (Peripheral) (DDC)

Target
DDC
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Lyase, Pyridoxal phosphate-dependent enzyme
01

Overview

DOPA decarboxylase (DDC), also known as aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase (AADC), is a pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP)-dependent enzyme that catalyzes the decarboxylation of L-DOPA to dopamine and L-5-hydroxytryptophan to serotonin. The peripheral form refers to its activity outside the central nervous system. Peripheral DDC is targeted by inhibitors like carbidopa and benserazide to enhance levodopa's efficacy in treating Parkinson's disease by preventing its premature conversion to dopamine in the periphery, reducing side effects and increasing CNS availability.
