The **dopamine biosynthesis pathway** is a metabolic sequence responsible for producing dopamine from amino acid precursors. The main steps involve conversion of L-phenylalanine to L-tyrosine by phenylalanine hydroxylase; then L‑tyrosine is converted into L‑DOPA by tyrosine hydroxylase—the rate-limiting step. Aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase then converts L-DOPA into dopamine. This process occurs primarily in neurons and adrenal medulla cells. Dopamine produced via this route serves as a neurotransmitter and also acts as a precursor for norepinephrine and epinephrine synthesis[1][4]. Disruption at any step can lead to neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s disease due to insufficient dopamine production.
