Overview

The dopamine D4 receptor (D4R) is a member of the dopamine receptor family and a D2-like G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) encoded by the DRD4 gene. It is predominantly found in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus, playing key roles in cognition, attention, impulsivity, and reward processing. Polymorphisms within DRD4 have been linked to several neuropsychiatric conditions, including ADHD, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. Selective ligands targeting this receptor subtype are being explored for potential therapeutic applications. Its structure and polymorphism inform rational drug design.
