Dopamine Receptor (DAR)

Target
DAR
Molecular classification
G protein-coupled receptor, Receptor
01

Overview

Dopamine receptors are a family of G protein-coupled receptors that mediate the physiological actions of the neurotransmitter dopamine. They are widely expressed in the central nervous system and peripheral tissues and are divided into two families: D1-like (D1 and D5) and D2-like (D2, D3, and D4). They regulate motor control, motivation, cognition, emotion, and neuroendocrine secretion, and play key roles in neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, Alzheimer’s disease, and ADHD.

Mechanism of action

Agonists activate dopamine receptors, mimicking the effects of dopamine. Antagonists block dopamine receptors, preventing dopamine from binding and exerting its effects. Some drugs selectively target specific dopamine receptor subtypes.
