Overview

The dopamine receptor D2 subtype (DRD2) is a member of the dopamine receptor family, which are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) involved in mediating the physiological actions of dopamine, a key neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. DRD2 is encoded by the DRD2 gene in humans. It plays a critical role in motor control, reward, motivation, and cognition. As an autoreceptor, it regulates dopamine synthesis, release, and uptake. DRD2 is a primary target for antipsychotic drugs, with antagonism at this receptor underlying both therapeutic effects against psychosis and side effects such as extrapyramidal symptoms. Isoforms include long (D2L) and short (D2S) forms, with differing localization and function.
