Overview

Dopamine receptor D5 pseudogene 1 (DRD5P1) is a non-coding DNA sequence closely related to the functional DRD5 gene, which encodes the dopamine receptor D5. Unlike the DRD5 gene, the DRD5P1 pseudogene contains multiple in-frame stop codons and other features that prevent production of a functional protein[4]. Although the DRD5P1 pseudogene is transcribed, it does not form a functional dopamine receptor and thus has no known direct biological function or disease association[4][5]. Pseudogenes may sometimes regulate gene expression by acting as miRNA decoys or through generation of regulatory RNAs, but such effects are not characterized or established for DRD5P1 specifically[2]. The functional DRD5 receptor is a G protein-coupled receptor involved in dopamine signaling, but the pseudogene does not participate in these processes[5][7]. DRD5P1 is not a therapeutic target and should not be confused with the functional dopamine receptor D5 or the DRD5 gene[4][5].
