Overview

Dopamine release is the process by which dopamine, a key neurotransmitter, is secreted from neurons into the synaptic cleft or extracellular space. This event enables dopamine to interact with its receptors on target cells, influencing a wide range of physiological functions including motor control, motivation, reward processing, and learning. Dysregulation of dopamine release is implicated in disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia, drug addiction, and ADHD.

Mechanism of action

Dopamine release is modulated by drugs that affect dopamine synthesis, storage, release, reuptake, or degradation. Agonists stimulate dopamine receptors, while antagonists block them. Reuptake inhibitors increase dopamine levels in the synapse by preventing its removal. MAOIs prevent dopamine breakdown, increasing its availability.
