Dopaminergic neuron precursor cells are progenitor cells committed to the dopaminergic lineage, primarily found in the developing midbrain. These precursors give rise to mature dopaminergic neurons, which are the main source of dopamine in the mammalian central nervous system. Dopamine is a critical neurotransmitter involved in voluntary movement, mood regulation, reward processing, addiction, and stress responses. Loss or dysfunction of these precursor cells—and their differentiated progeny—is closely linked with Parkinson’s disease. They are being investigated as potential cell therapies for neurodegenerative diseases.
