The dorsal column fibers of the spinal cord are sensory nerve fibers that ascend within the dorsal column (also called the posterior column) of the spinal cord, forming part of the dorsal column-medial lemniscus (DCML) pathway. This is a tract rather than a single molecule, receptor, or pharmacological target. They are bundles of myelinated sensory axons originating from neurons in the dorsal root ganglia. These fibers ascend within the dorsal column (posterior column) of the spinal cord as two primary tracts: the fasciculus gracilis (medially, carrying signals from the lower body) and the fasciculus cuneatus (laterally, carrying signals from the upper body). They transmit fine touch, vibration, pressure, and proprioceptive signals from peripheral receptors to the medulla, where they synapse in the nucleus gracilis and nucleus cuneatus before projecting to the thalamus and ultimately to the primary somatosensory cortex. Lesions affecting these fibers compromise tactile discrimination and body position sense, which are essential for coordinated movement and environmental interaction. This entity is not a receptor nor a conventional molecular target, but a complex anatomical tract within the central nervous system.
