Dorsal root of spinal nerve

Molecular classification
Other (anatomical nerve root; not a molecule or protein family)
01

Overview

The dorsal root of the spinal nerve consists of bundles of sensory nerve fibers (afferent axons) that transmit information from the body’s periphery (skin, joints, viscera) into the spinal cord. Each dorsal root emerges from the posterior aspect of the spinal cord and joins with the ventral root, forming a mixed spinal nerve. Sensory cell bodies mediating these signals reside in the dorsal root ganglion (DRG), a structure closely associated with each dorsal root. Functionally, the dorsal root segregates sensory inputs to the central nervous system and is critical in somatosensory pathways for touch, temperature, pain, and proprioceptive signals. Injury or disease affecting the dorsal root can lead to sensory deficits or chronic pain syndromes.

02

Biological functions

Transmits sensory information (touch, pain, temperature, vibration, proprioception) from periphery to spinal cordForms part of the afferent sensory pathway
03

Disease associations

Neuropathic pain (if injured or diseased, the dorsal root can mediate or amplify neuropathic pain)Sensory loss (dorsal root injury leads to loss of sensation or paresthesia in specific body regions)
04

Safety considerations

Damage to the dorsal root during procedures (e.g., surgery) can cause permanent loss of sensation or neuropathic painHigh sensitivity to trauma and ischemia due to rich blood supply and specialized location
