Overview

Double-stranded RNA-activated protein kinase (PKR) is a serine/threonine protein kinase that plays a central role in the cellular response to viral infection and various stress signals. It is primarily known for its role in the innate immune response against viruses, becoming activated upon binding to double-stranded RNA (dsRNA). Once activated, PKR phosphorylates the eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 alpha (eIF2α), leading to inhibition of global mRNA translation. Beyond antiviral defense, PKR also responds to other stressors and has regulatory functions balancing cell survival/apoptosis/inflammation.
