Doublecortin domain containing 1 (DCDC1) encodes a hydrophilic, intracellular protein that belongs to the doublecortin (DCX) superfamily. The protein contains a single doublecortin domain, which classifies it within the microtubule-associated protein family, though unlike other doublecortin family members (with tandem domains), DCDC1 does not bind microtubules or regulate their polymerization directly. Its canonical biological activity relates to mediating dynein-dependent vesicular transport, most notably the transport of RAB8A-positive vesicles during cytokinesis. DCDC1 expression is highest in adult testis and apparently also in the eye and embryonic brain. Currently, there are no drugs or therapies that directly target DCDC1, and it is not considered a canonical therapeutic target. Disease associations, such as oxidative phosphorylation deficiencies or COVID-19, are correlative rather than causative.
