Divergent transcripts like this are commonly produced at gene promoters and typically result in short, unstable non-coding RNAs, also known as promoter upstream transcripts (uaRNAs) or divergent non-coding RNAs. The specific function, if any, of this transcript is unknown, and it is not recognized as a protein-coding gene, therapeutic target, or disease marker. The canonical DPH5 is a methyltransferase required for diphthamide biosynthesis on eEF2, but the divergent transcript has no such function and remains biologically uncharacterized.
