Drug Transporter Modulation

Molecular classification
Transporter, ABC superfamily, SLC superfamily, SLCO family
01

Overview

Drug transporter modulation refers to the alteration of the function, expression, or localization of drug transporters—integral membrane proteins responsible for moving drugs and other molecules across cellular membranes. These transporters are essential in determining the pharmacokinetics (absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion) and pharmacodynamics of many therapeutic agents. Modulation can occur through several mechanisms, including direct drug interactions, regulatory pathways, and genetic variants. Altered transporter function can lead to changes in drug efficacy and toxicity profiles. Transporter modulation is also a strategy for overcoming multidrug resistance in cancer therapy.
