DSTN pseudogene 5 (DSTNP5)

Target
DSTNP5
Molecular classification
Other, Pseudogene
01

Overview

DSTN pseudogene 5 is a non-coding DNA sequence in the human genome that closely resembles the functional DSTN (destrin) gene but has acquired mutations or genomic alterations that prevent it from encoding a functional protein. Like most pseudogenes, DSTNP5 is not believed to have canonical protein-encoding function. Some pseudogenes participate in cellular regulation by generating noncoding RNA transcripts that act as competitive endogenous RNAs or miRNA sponges, but no such activity is currently reported for DSTNP5. Pseudogenes are increasingly studied for their evolutionary value, their potential minor roles in gene expression regulation, and, in some cases, as disease biomarkers, but DSTNP5 is not established in any specific biological or clinical context.
