Dual specificity phosphatase 29 (DUSP29) is an atypical, non-receptor, dual specificity protein phosphatase able to dephosphorylate phosphotyrosine, phosphoserine, and phosphothreonine residues within the same substrate, with preference for phosphotyrosine. It modulates intracellular signaling cascades including attenuation of the ERK1/2 MAP kinase pathway and influences AMPK activity, especially in skeletal muscle, thereby impacting systemic glucose homeostasis, muscle cell differentiation, development, and neurogenic muscle atrophy. DUSP29 has also been linked to elevated glucocorticoid receptor signaling and is induced in conditions of skeletal muscle atrophy[1][2][3][6].
