Overview

Duck adenovirus 1, commonly known as Egg drop syndrome virus (EDSV), is a non-enveloped, double-stranded DNA virus belonging to the genus Atadenovirus. It is the primary causative agent of Egg drop syndrome '76 (EDS '76), a significant disease in poultry characterized by a sudden drop in egg production and the production of soft-shelled or shell-less eggs in otherwise healthy-looking birds. The virus is unique among adenoviruses for its ability to hemagglutinate avian erythrocytes, a property mediated by its fiber protein which facilitates attachment to host cell receptors. While the virus itself is a pathogen rather than a therapeutic target, its structural proteins—particularly the fiber and hexon proteins—are the primary targets for veterinary vaccine development. Control of the virus is primarily achieved through the administration of inactivated oil-emulsion vaccines or recombinant subunit vaccines designed to elicit neutralizing antibodies that block viral entry and systemic spread.
