Overview

Duck Tembusu virus (DTMUV) is an enveloped, positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus within the Flavivirus genus of the Flaviviridae family (PMID: 21541274). It emerged in 2010 as the causative agent of a severe contagious disease in ducks characterized by sudden onset of high fever, neurological symptoms, and a massive drop in egg production, often referred to as Duck Egg Drop Syndrome (PMID: 21613257). The whole inactivated virion antigens are used in veterinary medicine to formulate vaccines that provide active immunity against DTMUV infection. These antigens include the major structural proteins, specifically the envelope (E) protein, which is the primary target for neutralizing antibodies (PMID: 23405181). By presenting the complete, non-replicating viral structure to the host immune system, these vaccines trigger both humoral and cellular immune responses (PMID: 25653143). This prophylactic approach is essential for controlling outbreaks in the poultry industry and reducing the economic impact of the virus. Vaccination remains the most effective strategy for preventing the spread of DTMUV and maintaining poultry health.
