Overview

The duodenal mucosa is the innermost lining of the duodenum—the first segment of the small intestine. It consists primarily of epithelial cells arranged into villi and crypts that maximize surface area for nutrient absorption. Specialized cells within this layer secrete mucus to protect against acidic gastric contents and facilitate digestion by neutralizing stomach acid through Brunner's glands secretions. The lamina propria beneath contains connective tissue and immune cells that contribute to local defense mechanisms. While essential for digestive health and nutrient uptake, it is susceptible to various pathological processes such as inflammation (duodenitis), autoimmune reactions (celiac disease), neoplasia (polyps/cancer), and injury from toxins or medications.
