Overview

Dynein axonemal assembly factor 19 (DNAAF19), also known as CCDC103, is a cytoplasmic protein required for the assembly of axonemal dynein complexes, which are essential for the motility of cilia. DNAAF19 is a coiled-coil domain-containing protein thought to facilitate protein-protein interactions necessary for proper dynein arm formation and attachment in motile cilia. It plays critical roles in processes such as cilium movement and determination of left-right body symmetry during development. Mutations in DNAAF19 are implicated in primary ciliary dyskinesia—a genetic disorder characterized by impaired ciliary function leading to chronic respiratory tract infections, randomization of organ laterality, and, in some cases, infertility. There are no known drugs that target this protein, and it is not considered a direct therapeutic target.
