Dynein axonemal intermediate chain 4 (DNAI4) is a protein component of axonemal dynein complexes. These complexes are large multi-protein motors that generate movement of cilia and flagella by producing force along microtubules using ATP hydrolysis. DNAI4 is specifically a structural subunit within the axonemal dynein intermediate chain family and is essential for the assembly and function of motile cilia. Its dysfunction has been linked to primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), a disease characterized by abnormal ciliary motility and associated clinical symptoms such as chronic respiratory tract infections and impaired mucociliary clearance. DNAI4 is not generally considered a direct pharmacological or therapeutic target (e.g., not a receptor or enzyme with existing drug modulators). No current drugs target DNAI4 directly, nor is it used as a biomarker in clinical practice. There are no known specific safety concerns except those resulting from loss of DNAI4 function in genetic disorders.
