Overview

Dysfunctional tissue is a broad pathological descriptor used to characterize biological tissues that fail to maintain homeostasis or perform their normal physiological roles due to injury, aging, or chronic disease (NCBI, 2023). It is not a specific molecular target, such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter, but rather an anatomical and functional consequence of various underlying molecular pathologies (StatPearls, 2024). Common examples of dysfunctional tissue include fibrotic organs, senescent cell clusters, and ischemic regions following vascular compromise (PubMed, 2022). In pharmacology, therapeutic interventions are directed at specific molecular drivers of dysfunction—such as TGF-beta in fibrosis or pro-inflammatory cytokines in chronic wounds—rather than the 'tissue' as a standalone target (Mayo Clinic, 2023). Because the term lacks the specificity required for structural biology or precision drug design, it is considered an incorrect entry for a molecular target database. Managing dysfunctional tissue typically requires diagnostic imaging and biochemical markers to identify the specific cellular processes that have been compromised (NIH, 2024).
