E2F transcription factor 6 (E2F6) is a member of the E2F family of transcription factors that control cell cycle progression. Unlike many other E2F proteins, E2F transcription factor 6 acts as a transcriptional repressor, and its function is independent of the pocket protein family (pRB, p107, p130). It represses E2F-responsive genes by counteracting the activity of other E2F complexes, likely through interactions with polycomb-group proteins and formation of multimeric complexes containing Mga and Max proteins[1][2]. The protein is involved in the regulation of genes crucial for entry into the cell cycle, and altered activity or expression of E2F transcription factor 6 has been associated with cancer development and progression[1][4][5].
