EGR1 messenger RNA (mRNA) encodes the Early Growth Response 1 (EGR1) protein, a zinc finger transcription factor involved in regulating gene expression in response to various physiological and pathological stimuli. The EGR1 gene is located on human chromosome 5. EGR1 mRNA is rapidly induced by diverse extracellular signals and plays roles in cell differentiation, mitogenesis, apoptosis, neuronal plasticity, memory formation, fibrosis regulation, and tumor suppression. It serves as a marker for cellular responses and a potential therapeutic target due to its role in cancer resistance mechanisms. It also acts as a host restriction factor inhibiting SARS-CoV‑2 replication.
