Early secreted antigenic target 6 kDa (ESAT-6) is a small, secretory protein produced by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). It is a potent T cell antigen and plays a central role in the pathogenesis and virulence of tuberculosis. ESAT-6 contributes significantly to Mtb’s ability to infect and persist within host cells by modulating host immune responses, disrupting phagosomal membranes, and interfering with antigen presentation. It is also a diagnostic marker and potential vaccine candidate.
Blocking or neutralizing ESAT-6 function impairs intracellular survival of M. tuberculosis.
