Overview

Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) antigens are the structural components of the EEEV virion, primarily consisting of the E1 and E2 surface glycoproteins and the internal capsid protein (UniProt, 2024). These proteins are essential for the viral life cycle; the E2 glycoprotein mediates binding to host cell receptors, while the E1 glycoprotein facilitates the fusion of the viral envelope with the host endosomal membrane (Hundie et al., 2022). EEEV is a highly virulent alphavirus transmitted by mosquitoes, leading to severe neurological disease and a mortality rate of approximately 30% in humans (CDC, 2024). Because there are currently no approved vaccines or specific antiviral therapies for EEEV, these antigens serve as the primary targets for the development of neutralizing monoclonal antibodies and recombinant vaccines (Adams et al., 2021). Therapeutic interventions typically aim to block the E2-mediated attachment or E1-mediated fusion processes to prevent infection of central nervous system cells.
