Ebola Virus Glycoprotein (Zaire) (GP)

Target
GP
Molecular classification
Viral glycoprotein, Fusion protein
01

Overview

The Ebola virus glycoprotein (GP) is the sole viral protein expressed on the surface of the virion and is essential for infectivity. It mediates both attachment to host cells and catalysis of membrane fusion, making it a critical determinant of viral entry and pathogenesis. The GP is also a major target for neutralizing antibodies, vaccines, and antiviral drugs. It exists as full-length GP (GP1,2), which forms trimeric spikes, and secreted GP (sGP). The full-length GP consists of GP1 (receptor binding) and GP2 (membrane fusion) subunits. It's heavily glycosylated, contributing to immune evasion.
