Overview

The eccrine sweat duct lumen is the central cavity of the tubular structure that conveys sweat from the secretory coil of the eccrine gland to the skin surface. It plays a vital role in thermoregulation and electrolyte homeostasis, specifically through the reabsorption of sodium and chloride ions via epithelial sodium channels (ENaC) and CFTR proteins located in the ductal wall (StatPearls, 2023). Although it is an anatomical location rather than a single molecular target, it is the site of action for topical antiperspirants like aluminum chloride. These compounds interact with the sweat within the lumen to form a gel-like precipitate or plug that physically obstructs the duct and prevents sweat release (Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology, 2014). Pathological obstruction of the lumen leads to miliaria, where sweat leaks into the surrounding skin, while overactivity is associated with hyperhidrosis (Mayo Clinic, 2022). In conditions like cystic fibrosis, the ductal lumen is the site where defective chloride transport results in abnormally high salt concentrations in sweat (NIH, 2023). Understanding the physiology of the lumen is essential for developing treatments for sweat-related disorders and for diagnostic testing.
