Overview

Eccrine sweat duct lumen contents refer to the fluid mixture found within the secretory and ductal portions of eccrine sweat glands, primarily composed of water, electrolytes such as sodium and chloride, and metabolic byproducts like urea and lactate (StatPearls, 2023). The primary physiological role of these contents is to enable thermoregulation via evaporative cooling when the fluid is secreted onto the skin surface (NIH, 2022). While not a specific molecular target like a receptor or enzyme, the lumen contents are the functional site for antiperspirant therapy. In this context, aluminum-based salts react with the sweat to precipitate ductal proteins, forming physical plugs that block sweat release (Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology, 2009). In clinical diagnostics, the electrolyte composition of the lumen contents, specifically chloride concentration, is the gold standard biomarker for diagnosing Cystic Fibrosis (Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 2023). Disorders such as hyperhidrosis involve the overproduction of these contents, while miliaria results from their entrapment within the skin layers due to ductal obstruction.
