The eccrine sweat gland duct is a specialized structure within the eccrine sweat gland system, responsible for transporting sweat from the secretory coil deep in the dermis to the skin surface. This duct plays a crucial role in thermoregulation and electrolyte balance by facilitating both secretion and partial reabsorption of ions. The duct consists of two main segments: a coiled segment and a straight segment that leads up to the skin surface. It is lined by two layers of cuboidal epithelial cells. Its main function is to conduct hypotonic sweat produced by secretory coils toward the skin surface for evaporative cooling. It reabsorbs sodium chloride along its length via active transport mechanisms. Dysfunction can lead to disorders such as cystic fibrosis.
