The eccrine sweat gland duct lumen is the hollow interior of the tubular structure that transports sweat from the secretory coil in the dermis to the skin's surface. Its primary biological role is to facilitate thermoregulation by allowing the passage of sweat for evaporative cooling, while also reabsorbing sodium and chloride ions to maintain electrolyte balance (StatPearls, 2023). While not a traditional molecular target like a receptor or enzyme, the lumen is the functional site of action for topical antiperspirants. These agents, primarily aluminum-based salts, react with the sweat and ductal proteins to form a physical keratin-aluminum plug that occludes the lumen (Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology, 2009). This physical blockage is the standard treatment for hyperhidrosis, a condition of excessive sweating. Conversely, pathological obstruction of the lumen can lead to miliaria, where sweat leaks into the surrounding skin layers and causes inflammation (DermNet NZ, 2021). Because it is an anatomical space rather than a specific protein, it is classified as a structural target in dermatological pharmacology.
