The eccrine sweat gland duct lumen components refer to the complex mixture of water, electrolytes, and macromolecules found within the ductal portion of eccrine sweat glands. This mixture includes sodium, chloride, potassium, and various organic substances such as mucopolysaccharides and proteins like dermcidin (NCBI, 2019). These components are the primary therapeutic target for topical antiperspirants, most notably aluminum-based salts such as aluminum chloride and aluminum chlorohydrate. When applied to the skin, these salts dissolve in the sweat and enter the duct, where they react with the lumen's mucopolysaccharides and proteins to form a gelatinous precipitate, often referred to as a hyaline plug (StatPearls, 2023). This plug physically obstructs the distal portion of the sweat duct, preventing the release of sweat onto the skin surface, which is the standard treatment for hyperhidrosis (PubMed, 2004). While effective for controlling excessive sweating, the formation of these plugs can lead to localized side effects such as skin irritation, stinging, or the development of miliaria if the ductal obstruction is too deep or persistent (NIH, 2022). This target represents a unique pharmacological approach where the drug acts on the secretory product rather than a cellular receptor.
