Overview

The eccrine sweat gland duct lumen mucopolysaccharides and surface proteins represent a complex structural target located within the distal portion of the sweat gland. These components, which include glycosaminoglycans and various luminal proteins like keratin, play a critical role in the physical transport of sweat from the secretory coil to the skin surface (StatPearls, 2023). In the context of pharmacology, they serve as the primary site of action for metallic salt-based antiperspirants, such as aluminum chloride (PubMed, PMID: 7318321). When these salts are applied topically, they diffuse into the duct and undergo a neutralization reaction, leading to the formation of a metal-protein-mucopolysaccharide complex. This complex precipitates to form a physical hyaline plug or gel that occludes the ductal opening, thereby reducing the excretion of sweat (JAAD, 2007). This mechanism is essential for managing conditions like hyperhidrosis and bromhidrosis, although the effect is temporary as the plugs are eventually shed through the natural process of epidermal turnover. Excessive occlusion of this target can lead to miliaria, a condition characterized by sweat retention and ductal rupture (StatPearls, 2022).
