Overview

Eccrine sweat gland duct luminal proteins and mucopolysaccharides are the primary biochemical constituents within the sweat duct that interact with topical antiperspirants. These substances, primarily glycoproteins and glycosaminoglycans, react with aluminum salts to form a physical precipitate or plug that obstructs the distal sweat duct (StatPearls, 2023). This mechanism is the standard therapeutic approach for treating hyperhidrosis, a condition characterized by excessive sweating. In the context of miliaria (heat rash), the obstruction of these ducts by PAS-positive mucopolysaccharide plugs leads to sweat leakage into the epidermis or dermis, causing inflammation (PubMed, 2021). Consequently, these luminal components are critical targets for both the pharmacological control of sweat and the understanding of sweat-related dermatoses (Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, 2004). Their role is primarily structural and obstructive rather than signaling-based, distinguishing them from traditional receptor targets.
