Overview

Echinoderm microtubule-associated protein-like 4 (EML4) is a microtubule-associated protein essential for the formation and stability of microtubules and the mitotic spindle, enabling proper cell division. In cancers, especially non-small cell lung cancer, oncogenic fusions between EML4 and ALK generate the EML4-ALK fusion protein, which drives tumorigenesis by constitutively activating ALK signaling. EML4-ALK fusion-positive cancers are clinically significant due to their sensitivity to targeted ALK inhibitors.
