Echinoderm microtubule-associated protein-like 5 (EML5) is a large, evolutionarily conserved cytoskeletal protein that contains multiple WD40 domains and hydrophobic EMAP-like protein (HELP) domains. These structural elements suggest a role in microtubule stabilization, modulation of their assembly dynamics, and interactions with other proteins. EML5 is expressed highly in the brain, particularly in the hippocampus, cerebellum, and olfactory bulb, and appears important in neuronal development and adult neural function. Like other members of the EMAP family, it likely regulates microtubule dynamics, impacting cytoskeletal rearrangements, especially in neural tissues. There are no drugs known to interact with EML5, it is not a classical therapeutic target, and there is no evidence implicating it directly as a disease biomarker or gene target in major diseases, although mutations are associated with lysosomal storage disorders such as Mucopolysaccharidosis IVB.
