Overview

Echinoderm microtubule-associated protein-like 6 (EML6) is a member of a conserved family of proteins known as microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs), which in general are involved in microtubule regulation and stabilization[1][2][3][5][9][11]. Mammalian genomes encode six EML proteins (EML1–EML6), with EML6 being structurally distinct from some family members because it lacks an N-terminal domain needed for direct microtubule association. EML6 is predicted to have microtubule binding and to participate in modulating microtubule assembly, potentially making microtubules slightly longer and more dynamic[3][5][7][11]. Its principal biological role and detailed molecular functions are not well-characterized, but it may impact microtubule dynamics in certain cellular contexts, such as cell division. While mutations or fusions involving other EML proteins (notably EML4) are implicated in oncogenesis, there is currently no evidence that EML6 is a prominent therapeutic target or is associated with major disease mechanisms beyond predicted links to astigmatism[3][5][11]. No known drugs target EML6, and it is not currently used as a biomarker or associated with specific therapeutic safety considerations.
