Overview

The ecological vaginal and intestinal microbiota represents the diverse community of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, that reside in the human reproductive and digestive tracts. These microbial ecosystems are essential for maintaining physiological homeostasis by providing a barrier against pathogens, synthesizing essential nutrients like Vitamin K, and regulating the host immune system (Lynch & Pedersen, 2016, NEJM). In the vaginal environment, dominance by Lactobacillus species is critical for maintaining a low pH, which protects against urogenital infections and preterm birth (Ravel et al., 2011, PNAS). Conversely, the intestinal microbiota is heavily involved in energy harvest and the development of mucosal immunity. Dysbiosis, or the disruption of these communities, is linked to a wide range of pathologies including bacterial vaginosis, inflammatory bowel disease, and metabolic syndrome (Kho & Lal, 2018, Korean J Intern Med). Therapeutic strategies targeting these ecosystems include the use of probiotics, prebiotics, and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) to restore ecological balance and treat conditions like recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection.
