EDRF1 antisense RNA 1 (EDRF1-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA transcribed from the opposite strand of the EDRF1 gene. As an antisense RNA, it plays a regulatory role by inhibiting expression of the EDRF1 gene. Experimental studies in K562 erythroleukemia cells have shown that introducing EDRF1 antisense RNA downregulates GATA-1 transcription factor expression and DNA-binding activity, which impacts erythroid differentiation. Through these effects, EDRF1-AS1 modulates the expression of several cytokine receptors (such as IL-6 and GM-CSF receptors) and oncogenes (including c-Myc and c-kit), suggesting its involvement in cell proliferation and differentiation. To date, EDRF1-AS1 is not recognized as a classic therapeutic target or receptor, nor are there drugs in clinical use that interact with this molecule.
