EEF1A lysine methyltransferase 3 (METTL21B)

Target
METTL21B
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Protein methyltransferase

Overview

EEF1A lysine methyltransferase 3 (METTL21B) is a lysine-specific protein methyltransferase that targets the eukaryotic translation elongation factor 1A (eEF1A), specifically methylating it at Lys-165. This enzyme belongs to the methyltransferase-like family (METTL), classified under protein methyltransferases, and is involved in post-translational regulation of eEF1A, a molecule essential for protein synthesis and cellular stress responses. METTL21B is expressed in various human tissues and has been implicated as a prognostic biomarker for cancer, especially low-grade glioma, where its overexpression correlates with poor clinical outcomes. Genetic or expression changes in METTL21B have also been linked to disease processes such as multiple sclerosis, though causality is unclear. Its biological functions include modulating protein translation and maintaining protein homeostasis, particularly under stress or in malignancy.
