Overview

EF-hand calcium-binding domain-containing protein 13 (EFCAB13) is a human protein encoded by the EFCAB13 gene, also known as C17orf57. EFCAB13 contains the EF-hand motif, a helix-loop-helix structural domain characteristic of calcium-binding proteins, which typically mediate the binding of calcium ions and can undergo conformational changes upon calcium binding. While the precise biochemical and cellular functions of EFCAB13 remain incompletely characterized, available evidence suggests a dual role in both cancer susceptibility and neuronal gene expression regulation. Notably, genetic variants in EFCAB13 have been linked to an increased risk of familial prostate cancer, and differences in its expression have been associated with human prefrontal cortex function, potentially impacting synaptic plasticity and cognition. There is currently no data linking EFCAB13 directly to any approved or investigational drugs, nor are there established mechanisms of action, biomarkers, or safety concerns related to therapeutic targeting. EFCAB13 is classified molecularly within the EF-hand domain family, indicating a primary function likely related to calcium signaling or binding, but it is not recognized as a classical therapeutic target such as a receptor, ion channel, enzyme, or transporter.
