Overview

EFCAB2-AS1 is a predicted long non-coding antisense RNA transcribed from the EFCAB2 locus. Antisense transcripts like EFCAB2-AS1 are typically non-protein-coding and may regulate their corresponding sense gene (EFCAB2) post-transcriptionally or transcriptionally by mechanisms observed with other natural antisense transcripts, such as modulating mRNA stability or translation[2]. However, there is currently no direct experimental evidence regarding the specific function, biological role, clinical relevance, or disease association for EFCAB2-AS1 itself. No drugs or therapeutics are known to interact with or target this transcript, and it is not regarded as a classical receptor, enzyme, or therapeutic target. The sense gene, EFCAB2, encodes a testis-specific calcium-binding protein with two EF-hand motifs and is involved in calcium signaling within sperm cells[1]. Antisense long non-coding RNAs (as a class) often participate in gene regulation but require experimental validation for each member[2]. RP11-156E8.1 is the Ensembl/Gencode accession for this lncRNA transcript and refers to the same entity. If interest involves protein targets, EFCAB2 (not the antisense transcript) would be the calcium-binding protein[1]. EFCAB2-AS1 does not fit criteria for being a canonical therapeutic receptor, enzyme, or transporter and is best classified as a predicted natural antisense long non-coding RNA. There is no direct evidence for it as a drug target or biomarker at this time.
