They play pivotal roles in protective immunity against infections and cancer by providing swift secondary immune responses. The term "activated effector-memory T cell" refers to T_EM cells that have recently encountered antigen and are functionally active, but this is a cell population/state, not a single druggable molecular target[3][4][5]. Effector memory T cells can be further classified as CD4+ or CD8+ based on co-receptor expression, but as a whole, they are not themselves a molecular target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter[2][7]. Therapeutic approaches such as vaccines and adoptive T cell therapies often aim to boost or utilize effector memory T cells for durable immune protection[5][6].
