Overview

Effector T cells and antigen-presenting cells (APCs) represent a fundamental cellular axis in the adaptive immune system rather than a single molecular target (Janeway et al., 2001). APCs, such as dendritic cells and macrophages, process and present antigens via Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) molecules to the T-cell receptor (TCR) on effector T cells (Chen & Flies, 2013). This interaction, known as the immunological synapse, is regulated by a complex array of co-stimulatory (e.g., CD28-CD80/86) and co-inhibitory (e.g., PD-1-PD-L1, CTLA-4-CD80/86) signals (Pardoll, 2012). Therapeutic intervention typically involves targeting specific receptors or ligands on these cells to either enhance immune responses against cancer and infections or suppress responses in autoimmune diseases (NCBI, 2023). Because this entry describes a cellular interaction involving multiple distinct proteins, it is classified as a biological system rather than a discrete therapeutic target. Understanding the dynamics between these cells is essential for the development of modern immunotherapies, including checkpoint inhibitors and CAR-T cell therapies (Nature, 2021).
